AN ORIGINAL PENCIL SKETCH FOR CANTERBURY
TALES
.
[6,000/9,000]
An excellent work by Kent, illustrating the endpapers to Alexander’s controversial work Candy, the
story of African-American life in South Carolina and its residents who were stirred up by the arrival
of a visitor from Harlem. Kent designed these endpapers, the dust jacket, and five illustrations for the
book. This lot is accompanied by a letter to the owner by Kent expert, JakeWien, confirming the work
and also commenting that the interesting sketch on the verso was indeed an unpublished study for
endpapers to Kent’s illustrated Canterbury Tales, also published in 1934.Wien explains that Kent
abandoned the more figurative strategy of pilgrims on horseback and likened them to William Blake’s
portrayal.
