The work was published in New York by Macmillan in 1897 and contained an Introduction by
HamiltonWright Mabie with all illustrations by Edwards. Illustration or chapter titles penciled in the
margin (in the order of the book): “Lullaby of a Lover” * Rosalynd’s Madrigal” * “The Passionate
Shepherd to His Love” * Ariel’s Songs” * “To Althea from Prison.”

Iowa-born Enabnit was famous for his
wartime “Merlin Girls” pin-ups. He was also
a respected portrait painter and worked on sev-
eral successful advertising campaigns for Coca
Cola, V-8, Miller Beer and other products.
Though an American, Life magazine called
Enabnit “England’s answer to George Petty”
due to the popularity of his Merlin Girls
amongst British G. I.’s duringWWII.
