Best known for his classic Johnny Crow’s Garden, L. Leslie Brooke was also an important British
illustrator of nursery rhymes and fairy tales including The Golden Goose. He was the one who con-
vinced his publishers FrederickWarne & Co. to issue The Tale of Peter Rabbit by the then unknown
Beatrix Potter in 1902. Includes a proof hand-colored by Brooke with slight variations from the fin-
ished watercolor.
