Max
follows Sendak’s “For Robert” inscription
with a voice bubble saying “With plea-
sure!” and a note by Sendak below adding “ & thank you for the great Wagner! Maurice Sendak.”
The laid-in notecard, also to Gutman (“Dear Bob”) expresses holiday wishes and tells him that “My
good papa addressed all my Christmas cards this past week—how’s that for terrific parent relation-
ship!” Sendak, a fan of opera, contacted Gutman after the publication of his book “Richard Wagner:
The Man, His Mind, and His Music,” NewYork, 1968, and the two shared many visits discussing
music and opera in the ensuing years.
