Hennepin’s second book, which recounts his journey up the Mississippi, and
adds an account taken from La Salle’s journey down the river. Among the plates is the first
view of Niagara Falls to appear in print, which according to Dow was “followed by engravers
and artists for upwards of one hundred fifty years.” Also included are two large folding maps
(one of them showing the route of the “Meschasipi” River far to the west of the actual
