Morris Island, SC, October 1864
[1,000/1,500]
A haunting depiction of Fort Sumter, which the Confederates captured in 1861 to launch the
war. The Union forces (including the famous 54th Massachusetts Infantry) captured nearby
Morris Island in July 1863 and commenced a long bombardment of the fort. Though it was
reduced almost to rubble, it remained in Confederate hands when this photograph was taken in
October 1864, and was not recaptured until February 1865. The Morris Island beach can be
seen in the foreground.
