its innovative use of Greek sources, originally published circa 1472 and here reprinted with

Contemporaries of Erasmus III, 341. George (1395-1472) was a Cretan émigré scholar and,
with Cardinal Bessarion, one of the principal antagonists in the mid-15th-century controversy
in Greek humanist circles over Platonic versus Aristotelian philosophy (see lot 20).
