In 1884, Verne published a poem entitled “Au Marquis Gravina, Rome,” and in the previous
year, the city of Rome celebrated painter Raphael’s birth, with the Prefect of Rome, the Marquis
Gravina, among the officials who participated; Verne may have attended and inscribed the pho-
tograph during the festivities.
