A serviceman's album with nearly 300 photographs documenting his 1934 tour of China and Japan.
Assembled by a talented amateur named Donald McGee, the album captures sights of interest, street life, and the lives of sailors on the voyage, effectively presenting the young western tourist's view of Asia with skill and artistry. Areas covered by the album include: Shanghai, Amoy (Xiamen), Hong Kong, Enoshima and Kamakura (Japan), Peking (Beijing), Great Wall of China & Nankou Pass, the Forbidden City, various temples including the Temple of Heaven, the Lama (Yonghe) Temple, Confucian Temple, the Summer Palace, the Winter Palace, Paradise Temple, Ten Thousand Buddha Temple, Dragon Wall, Old Observatory, Chingwangtao (Qinhuangdao), Hongchow (Hangzhou) and viewing of the Hongchow Bore, Suchow (Suzhou), and Guam (Agana); including images from the funeral of Japanese Admiral Togo Heihachiro. Silver prints, the images measuring approximately 4¼x2 5/8 inches (11x6.7 cm.), and the reverse, arranged in corners recto/verso, each with a caption, in white ink.
