(HOLLYWOOD—FANCHON AND MARCO) Archive comprising 81 photographs by Harry Wenger, documenting the elaborate performances, Art Deco-style sets, and the spectacular “Fanchonettes” in shows produced by the sibling-owned production company, Fanchon and Marco.
The uniformly composed photographs depict a broad array of energetic performances and roaring “stage shows” known as “Fanchon and Marco Ideas.” Each of these productions included the trademark “Fanchonettes,” a 48-woman troupe that performed in perfect unison, and incorporated fresh choreography, luxuriously embellished costumes, glimmering curtains, and multi-leveled sets, hand-painted to a meticulous degree of extravagance. Silver prints, the images measuring approximately 7x9 inches (17.8x22.9 cm.), and slightly larger, nearly all with Harry Wenger’s credit in the negative, and many with a Fanchon and Marco hand stamp, and/or affixed caption labels, or notations, in pencil, identifying the specific production and/or performers, on verso. 1920s-30s
