295 •(MARVEL BEAUTY SCHOOL--WINNIPEG, MB)
A cutting-edge and complete archive with 115 photographs documenting a beauty school in the unlikely town of Winnipeg, Manitoba. With pictures highlighting the swinging hairstyles, salon schooling, students practicing, and more.
The photographs were made at a time of cultural transition, with the freedom and self-expression of the late Sixites not-so-subtly revealed in an array of wild hairstyles. Although more traditional, conservative cuts make an appearance the trend to outlandish, cutting-edge extremes was more of the norm. Also depicted are scenes of students practicing on willing participants, who subject themselves to the sharp scissors of amateur stylists in exchange for a cut-rate trim. Additionally, there are group shots of graduating classes, with many of the individuals donning chic coiffures, likely styled by their fellow classmates. Silver (110) and chromogrenic (6) prints, the images mostly measuring 8x10 inches (20.3x25.4 cm), and some smaller, many with a photographer's hand stamp and date on recto, and/or notations, in pencil or ink, on verso. 1950s-60s
