311 •(ATOMIC BOMB TESTING--BIKINI ATOLL)
Series of 13 iconic photographs depicting the 1946 Baker Day detonation at Bikini Bay.
The images primarily depict the moment of explosion and the seconds thereafter, as seen from land and sky, with bulbous mushroom clouds flung high into the atmosphere. One image portrays the "gallant old aircraft carrier" Saratoga as it slips into the dark depths of the radioactive lagoon, some 7 hours post-detonation. Silver prints, the images mostly measuring approximately 8x10 inches (20.3x25.4 cm.), and two 4x5 inches (10.2x12.7 cm.), two with a mimeographed caption and the Army Navy Task Force credit on verso; with the original U.S. Navy manilla sleeve. 1946
