20 •(ALGERIA)
An album entitled Algiers, with 60 professional photographs, several by the Leroux studio.
The photographs are a compelling mix of desert architectural studies, narrow streets filled with daily bustle, and a variety of studio and "in situ" portraits, showing indigenous peoples of Northern Africa, military figures, falconers, concubines, and many more; some credited to Algiers photographer Alexandre Leroux. Albumen (48) and silver (12) prints, the images measuring approximately 8½x11 inches (21.6x27.9 cm.), and the reverse, mounted recto/verso, many with a numeric inventory number and caption, in French, and a few with Leroux's credit, in the negative. Oblong folio, gilt-lettered red cloth with leatherette details, lightly soiled; binding tight. Circa 1885
