33 •(JAPAN) A pair of Japanese albums with a total of 69 photographs showing scenic landscapes, studies of temples, gardens, and overviews of towns and small cities as well as ruins after an earthquake. Including numerous delicately hand-colored photographs. The first album with 35 photographs, 10 of which are not hand-colored and appear to show the devastating aftermath of the Mino-Owari Earthquake of 1891, including residents standing amid the ruins. The second with 34 photographs, nearly half of which are hand-colored. Albumen prints, the images measuring approximately 7½x9½ inches (19.1x24.1 cm.), and slightly larger, and the reverse, mounted recto/verso, some with captions or numeric notations in the negative. Small oblong folios, leather, lightly worn, each with a gilt-lettered roman numeral (I and III) on the backstrip. 1890s
