Lot 331
331 •(FIRE) A collection of approximately 37 large photographs depicting tense, heated scenes of firefighters and pedestrians attempting to tame the blazes as they swallow buildings, cars, and forests.
The dramatic scenes show an array of disasters, from the "Oil A-Bomb" refinery fire causing $3m in damages, and various forest and domestic fires stripping foliage and houses bare, to a mysterious image of a fireman engulfed in smoke, a view of cows looking on as their feed is accidentally incinerated, and the trees of a cemetery ablaze. Silver prints, the images measuring approximately 11x14 inches (27.9x35.6 cm.), some slightly smaller, and the reverse, each with various notations, in pencil, wax crayon, and ink, and some with the photographer's credit or hand stamp, on verso. 1940s-70s
