Thomaston, 28 November 1799 [800/1,200] “A dagger indeed was your letter my dear friend . . . . A volume of words would give no adequate conception of the agony of soul in which we were plunged. “We are his parents—we are bound by the ties of the human heart, and by the laws of society, to endevor his reformation. But the means seem to be beyond our control. We had expected that the unfortunate had left Boston on the 28th of the last month, nor were we undeceived until we received yours. . . . “I send you the letter open, that you may send, and give the direction that will the soonest reach him. Your letter to him was perfect.”
