Salem, 13 April 1848 [400/600] The preface of Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter , published in 1850, is entitled “The Custom- House”; in it, the narrator is introduced as an official employed at the CustomHouse in Salem. 240 241 241    HEINE, HEINRICH.Two items: Autograph Endorsement Signed * Fragment of an Autograph Letter, unsigned. The endorsement, “Good for six hundred marc banco / Heinrich Heine / 50 rue d’Amsterdam,” in German, at lower right, on a bill of exchange for 600 Marc Banco to be paid in one month to the Rothschild brothers.The bill of exchange, a manuscript document, in German, with “Angenommen / Hofmann & Campe” written vertically, in unknown hand. 4 1 / 4 x10 1 / 2 inches; transfer signatures on verso, minor scattered soiling, folds. The fragment, to Adolf Fritz Hvass, acknowledging receipt of 500 francs. 1 page, 3 1 / 4 x8 inches; salutation excised, trimmed at lower edge, mounted to a larger sheet.
