The “Ol’ 97,” a Southern Railway locomotive, officially known as the Fast Mail, was en route from Monroe, Virginia, to Spencer, North Carolina, when it derailed at Stillhouse Trestle near Danville, Virginia, in September of 1903. According to Benton, this lithograph was based on a 1939 drawing he made in western Nebraska, during a trip through the Plains region with U.S. Army personnel to buy quarter horses for the French light artillery in World War II.
