337 c THOMAS HART BENTON Down the River . Lithograph, 1939. 318x252 mm; 12 1 / 2 x10 inches, full margins. Edition of 250. Signed in pencil, lower right. Published by Associated American Artists, New York. A superb, richly- inked impression. According to the artist, he based this lithograph on drawings made during a 1939 float trip on the White River in the Ozarks. Though the river was ultimately engulfed by the Bull Shoals dam, Benton took twice yearly—spring and summer—float trips on the river during the 1930s. The boy seen from behind in the foreground is the artist’s son, T.P. Benton. Fath 33. [3,000/5,000]
