[700/1,000] MARIO PUPPO (1905-1977) 108 c CORTINA. 1938. 39 1 / 2 x26 3 / 4 inches, 100 1 / 4 x68 cm. Pizzi & Pizio, Milan. Condition B+ / B: replaced losses at edges; repaired tears, creases and restoration in margins and along vertical and horizontal folds; minor restored losses in image. One of the great Italian tourist poster designers, Puppo’s career began in the 1930s and continued well into the 1950s. Although all of his work reflects progressive design principles, his earlier posters are avant-garde in their design, featuring Art Deco graphics and dramatic (almost cinematic) angles. In this bold, confident image, the angle of the slope is echoed by the man’s arm and the direction of the couple’s gaze, and their ski poles parallel the slant of the typography. Bolaffi p. 181, Travel Italia p. 57, Crouse p. 289. [3,000/4,000] 108
