Sale 2459 - Rare & Important Travel Posters, October 26, 2017

JOZEF WINTERS (1911-1981) 79 c ANTWERPEN / WELTHAFEN - KUNSTSTADT. Circa 1935. 39x24 inches, 99x61 cm. “Lithocart,” Belgium. Condition A: minor repaired tears in margins. Promoting Antwerp as a city with both an international port and great artistic heritage, the artist (who is unknown except for this poster) harmoniously aligns images of both themes. Against the colors of the Belgian flag, he depicts ships in the city’s harbor with the great Art Deco skyscraper, the Boerentoren (the Farmer’s Tower), against a darker silhouette of the city’s famous Cathedral of Our Lady. The excellent Art Deco image is composed of only flat tones of color and subtle shading, without the use of any outlining. [1,500/2,000]
