Louis Kalff, born in Amsterdam, was Art Director at Philips and designed ads, products and exhibitions for the company for almost 40 years. He aimed to modernize and unify the company’s commercial advertising and commitment to innovative technology. Kalff’s visual aesthetic went beyond his work for Philips, and is on display in the many posters he designed throughout his career. Here, the ocean liner is set in the background of a simple seascape, cut with the diagonal of the diving seagull, whose abstracted reflection would now call to mind pixels. Schipp & Affiche p. 139.
