Between 1923 and 1939 the Underground issued an annual panel poster to advertise the Tournament at Earl’s Court, which has remained its home ever since” (Pleasure Trips, p. 51). After studying at the École des Beaux Arts, A.E. Marty made his career as an artist in fashion - creating designs for magazines like Vogue , as well as theatre - working for the Ballet Russes and other companies designing sets, costumes, and posters. Marty designed fourteen of these small panel posters in 1933 for the London Underground, each picturing what seems to be the same fashionable mother and daughter visiting attractions and events in and out of London. Pleasure Trips p. 51. [1,500/2,000] HENRY RUSHBURY (1889-1968) 188 c JOHN CONSTABLE R.A. AT FLATFORD MILL. 1937. 40x50 inches, 101 1 / 2 x127 cm. Haycock Press, London. Condition B+: minor losses, restored losses, repaired tears and creases in margins; slight darkening at edges; minor creases, abrasions and light staining in image. In honor of the centenary of John Constable’s death, the London & North Eastern Railway offered art enthusiasts trips to visit places where Constable grew up and painted. Here, the artist himself is whimsically shown with his easel, within his own landscape that he painted circa 1816, FlatfordMill (Scene on a Navigable River) . Rushbury, like Constable, was a member of the prestigious Royal Academy. The image is a departure for Rushbury, whose other posters for the LNER primarily focused on architecture. [1,200/1,800] 188
