Sale 2459 - Rare & Important Travel Posters, October 26, 2017

OTTOMAR ANTON (1895-1976) 152 c IN 2 DAYS ACROSS THE ATLANTIC / HAMBURG - AMERIKA LINIE. Circa 1936. 33x23 1 / 2 inches, 83 3 / 4 x59 3 / 4 cm. Mühlmeister and Johler, Hamburg. Condition A- / A: minor repaired tears and restoration in margins; minor abrasions in image; repaired pin holes in corners. The Hindenburg , en route over the Atlantic Ocean, is cleverly juxtaposed with an old clipper ship on the sea below to emphasize the speed of the new airship. Curiously, the featured Zeppelin (which, by 1937, was being used as a propaganda tool as well as a means of transportation) was known to have two prominently painted swastikas on its tailfins; it appears that way in the German version of this poster, but here only one is depicted. This is the English version. Airlines p. 37, Crouse p. 27 (var). [3,000/4,000]
