During the spring of 1925, Calder spent two weeks in NewYork illustrating the Ringling

Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and during the winter of 1925 sketched the

Sarasota, Florida, training camp of the Ringling circus. Subsequently, in Paris in 1936 he

developed the

Cirque Calder

. His career-long interest in the circus continued to the later

graphic works.
