This large and vibrant work on paper is a scarce example of abstract painting by the artist. Jones was
clearly inspired by the rising popularity of Abstract-Expressionism in the early 1960s, and made some
forays into abstraction during her trips to Haiti at the time. Other examples of abstract paintings
include
Cock Fight
, 1960,
Mardi Gras
, 1961, and
Vévé Voudou II
, 1963. Benjamin pp. 84 and 86.
