Painters Larry Calcagno and Beauford Delaney met in 1953 in Paris, and they quickly became close
friends. They kept a correspondence after Calcagno returned to the U.S. in early 1954. Calcagno
returned to Europe in 1955, and invited Delaney to accompany him on the first of several trips to
