In the beginning of 1934, Henry Bannarn along with friend and fellow artist, Charles Alston,
founded the Alston-BannarnWorkshop in Harlem.The workshop, commonly refered to as the “306”
because of its address at 306 W. 141 Street, would become one of main workshops where young
artists in Harlem could take classes and receive guidance along with Augusta Savage’s studios and
the Harlem Art Workshop. Bannarn’s pupils at the Alston-Bannarn Workshop included Jacob
Lawrence and Bob Blackburn. Hills 21.
