Amid all of the shock, sensationalism and bewilderment surrounding many of the works
in the Armory Show, a great deal of the harshest criticism was levied on the paintings of
Paul Cézanne (1839-1906), though these were arguably also among the most influential.
They not only informed the next generation of American artists and collectors who
viewed the exhibition, but also served as a significant link between Impressionism and
Cubism. Cézanne’s recognition as a lynchpin in the revolution of modern art is widely
recognized among art historians and critics and is supported in sheer dollar terms with
his overwhelming posthumous success in the art market.
