inked impression of this extremely scarce, early woodcut, with strong contrasts.
There were eight works exhibited in the Armory Show by French Catalan sculptor Aristide
Maillol (1861-1944). They included one terra-cotta bas-relief (a similar composition to
this woodcut, see the installation view of Gallery H), one terra-cotta standing woman and
six drawings which were all lent by Galerie Émile Druet, Paris.Though no prints by Maillol
were included in the Armory Show, the medium was nonetheless a significant component
of his artistic practice. As with his drawings, the female figures in his prints convey a weight
and volume that reflect his mastery of sculpture. Guérin 8.
