Though less known today than his

contemporaries,Vuillard and Bonnard, Denis
was nevertheless more popular at the time of the Armory Show. Among the handful of
his lithographs that sold through the exhition, all from his best known series
Amour
,
published by Vollard in 1899, three were purchased by prominent collector Lillie P. Bliss
(all now in the Museum of Modern Art, NewYork) for a total of $36 (approximately $850
today). Meanwhile, his sole painting in the exhibition,
La Plage
, 1903, Musée d’Orsay,
Paris, was offered for what seems a staggering $8500 (or $200,000 today). Callier 29, 102,
132 and 231.
