FIRST SONCINO EDITION
of the life of the Roman statesman Cato the Elder by Nepos, and
brief works on Roman emperors by Sextus Aurelius Victor and Benevenuto Rambaldi da
Imola. Gershom ben Moses was the most famous member of the family of Jewish printers who
took their surname from the town of Soncino. He began printing there in 1488 and was active
in various locales for over 4 decades, including Fano (where he was the first printer) in the years
1501-06
and 1515-16. His output consisted of Hebrew works exclusively up to 1500, and
mostly non-Hebrew texts thereafter. Manzoni, Annali Tipografici dei Soncino II/2, 59
