Second Aldine edition after the first Aldine (and first in Italian) of 1585. Leroy’s book, “a
pioneering work on cyclical change in cultural history” (OCFL), was originally published in
1575
in French. In its final years the Aldine press was the first publishing firm to make a
regular practice of printing priced stock catalogues on spare pages in its books; one of the more
extensive of these appears on the last 3 preliminary pages of this edition, listing nearly 80
