The First World Advertising Congress was held
in Berlin in 1929. It was the brainchild of H.K.
Frenzel, who was the editor of the influential
German advertising magazine
Gebrauchsgraphik,
from 1924 to 1937. This event was an impor-
tant step in elevating the prominence of posters
as marketing tools. This poster, with its simple,
recognizable imagery, promotes the theme of
the event, “Advertising - the key to the wealth
of the world.” Although very little information
exists about the artist, the poster is nonetheless
an important historical document.

Sulfur springs in Eastern Europe have long been
sought out to cure a host of maladies. The Sile-
sian town Bad Landeck (Ladek Zdroj, in
Polish), has been a spa of great renown for cen-
turies. The traces of radium in the water there
has been said to help cure gout, rheumatism,
and other disorders. This light-toned image
finds its inspiration in the work of Ludwig
Hohlwein.
