Saito is a prominent Japanese graphic designer who rose to fame in the 1980s with his advertisements
for the Japanese fashion brands
Jun, Alpha Cubic
and
Batsu.
He stands out through his photomontage
technique and unexpected imagery. His posters “do not so much sell as present themselves as an enig-
matic alternative to the commerce of images out of which the poster itself was born” (Saito p. 21).
“Here clothes are completely submerged in dyes. As a result the visual field is nothing but color,
underneath which the excuse for the image hovers like the memory of reality” (ibid.). These in-store
displays were most often printed in runs of only one hundred, making them extremely scarce.
