Artzybasheff was a Russian émigré who worked in America as an illustrator. Specifically remembered
for his magazine illustrations and covers, he worked profusely for
Time
,
Life
and
Fortune
magazines,
he also illustrated books and did commercial design work. During the Second World War he worked
with the U.S. Department of State as part of the of Psychological Warfare branch. His work, which
combines surrealism and anthropomorphism, is immediately recognizable and striking.

Artzybasheff designed several propaganda images during that Second World War that caricatured the
Axis leaders, but this item (and the previous lot) are his only known posters for the war effort.
