(GARFIELD ASSASSINATION.) GUITEAU, CHARLES J. Autograph Letter
Signed, “To the Edition of the Herald,” retained draft, responding to an article in that day’s
Herald
concerning a “Profitable Collecting Lawyer,” arguing that he is entitled to collect all
of the initial payment in this case which he has been pursuing for years despite agreeing to
collecting only one half of the final settlement amount. Guiteau’s calling card mounted to
upper left recto. 1 page, folio, ruled paper; folds. (AKF)

“
Your Law reporter discourses amusingly in to-day’s Herald . . . . ‘All respectable Lawyers’,
says the reporter, ‘retain one half for collection’; to which, I reply, only by contract: not otherwise.
“
Ruis Bros & Co agreed to give me one half of all I could attain in a final settlement of their
claim . . . . I have been trying for four years to settle this case & claim that I am justly entitled
to the first installment paid for my fees & disbursements. . . . The motion has just been denied
by Judge Donohue.”
