ENGINEER RETURNS “REGARDS” TO FORMER FRIEND BEAUREGARD
201
BARNARD, JOHN GROSS. Autograph Letter Signed, “J.G.Barnard,” to P.G.T.
Beauregard, explaining that he must qualify the return of greetings because their relation-
ship of over 20 years had changed after he accepted a Confederate commission. 4 pages,
8vo, written on a single folded sheet, ruled paper; minor scattered soiling with faint stain
affecting signature. (AKF)
New York, 11 March 1861
[350/500]
. . . I can no longer regard you as I did before . . . . I could have overlooked much in these
times of sectional variance. I could have overlooked . . . your resignation. But, with that of your
State, your allegiance to the glorious flag of these United States were hence dissolved. . . .
But I cannot overlook that you are now in arms against my country (might I not with propri-
ety say, too, your country). But in the midst of the waters whose shores are now bristling with
armed men—waves a flag . . . . It is the flag which waved over your head when at Vera Cruz,
at Contreras, at Mexico, you conferred lustre upon it & gained glory for yourself. . . .
I cannot congratulate you in your new title, nor can I use it. I prefer to use that one which you
once felt to be an honor, and which you honored. Maj. G.T. Beauregard.”

I have not acknowledged the rec’pt of . . . your
check for ($250) . . . which you ask me to distrib-
ute among my gallant comrades ‘at Fort Sumter’,
because I have been hoping that I might have the
pleasure of . . . thanking you personally for your
disinterested kindness to my brave little band. . . .”
