KENT, ROCKWELL. Autograph Manuscript, unsigned, journal recorded during
one of his visits to Greenland containing entries beginning in August, concluding with a
list of loans made to various people, most in pencil, ending in March. 14 pages, small 8vo,
ruled paper, loose leaves removed from spiral binding, written on the recto and verso of
most sheets; paper clip stains at top of first and terminal pages.

Aug. — Monday. Brattahlid. Sheep farms. . . . The men had long blond (reddish) beards, and
were dressed in tattered clothes Their feet and hands were enormous. They walked as though
stalking, and crouching. One carried a large basket, out of this he took human bones . . . .”
In the chapter “Banker to the Seal-Hunters” of his book
Salamina
, which records Kent’s trip
to Greenland between 1931 and 1932, Kent writes that he made several small loans to the
locals. The names of loan recipients in the book match those in the list found at the end of the
journal in this lot.
