O’NEILL, EUGENE. Typed Letter Signed, to John H.G. Pell, asking for advice
about the mortgage on his own house, worrying that payments in the future would
become too burdensome, expressing pessimism about the war and about humankind. 1
page, 4to, personal stationery; ink received stamp at upper right, horizontal folds, tiny staple
holes at upper left corner.
Danville, 14 September 1939
[2,000/3,000]
“
. . . I am certain myself that, whatever war boom there may be . . . even if this country man-
ages to stay out of the war, the final result here will be a ruinous time which will make the last
depression seem like prosperity. . . .
“
This war has given me a bad case of the gloomy, vale of desolation jitters. Schopenhauer at his
most pessimistic would be a beaming Rotarian beside me. I can imaging nothing that will ever
teach the stupid, greedy, murderous, suicidal ass called man a lasting lesson except the Second
Flood. With no Noah floating around to carry on the bad work when the waters recede!”
