Custis (1781-1857) was the playwright stepson of President George Washington and the
father-in-law of General Robert E. Lee.

feels the solemnity of exercising a single choice amidst so many complicated circumstances. . . .”
In early February 1917, Wilson brought an end to diplomatic relations with Germany, a deci-
sion made at a time of increasing tension as World War I drew closer.
