GARY WINICK
To his family and friends, acclaimed director & producer Gary Winick (March 31,
1961 – Feb. 27, 2011) was noted as much for his professional accomplishments
as he was for his unique character, impeccable taste, and thoughtful collection
of art, photography, interior design and fine watches.
A native of Manhattan, Gary attended Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School,
and then graduated from Tufts University and completed Master of Fine Arts
degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and the American Film Institute
in Los Angeles.
After directing and producing a diverse body of smaller movies himself, Gary
sought to nurture New York’s growing independent production scene by co-
founding InDigEnt (Independent Digital Entertainment) to help emerging
filmmakers produce digitally shot features on minimal budgets. Catapulted into
notice by Hollywood, Gary went on to direct such larger budget commercial
features as 13 Going on 30 (Jennifer Garner), as well as Charlotte’s Web
(Dakota Fanning, Julia Roberts), Bride Wars (Anne Hathaway, Kate Hudson),
and last year’s Letters to Juliet (Amanda Seyfried, Vanessa Redgrave).
Gary was noted for his keen eye for detail, both professionally and personally.
Visitors to his film sets and his home were struck by his appreciation of the
unique, and by elements of his taste and design sense that ran from classic to
contemporary. He was marked by his enormous generosity of spirit, the depth
and diversity of his friendships and influences, and his fascination with the
details of human character. He fought his lengthy battle with brain cancer with
the same spirit with which he lived his life – with bravery, dignity and grace.
