This is an early portrait by Texan artist Sedrick Huckaby — after his B.F.A. from Boston University
in 1997, Huckaby received an M.F.A. fromYale University in 1999. Huckaby’s recent work includes
painterly portraits inspired by jazz music and quilts that have been in his family. He has been honored
with several awards, such as the Joan Mitchell Foundation Award, the Anne Giles Kimbrough Grant
from the Dallas Museum of Art, and in 2008, the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship. His work is
found in many museum collections, including the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Museum of
Fine Arts, Boston, the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, Durham, NC, and the Whitney
Museum of American Art, NewYork.
