series incorporates many of his most well
known elements. In her 1995 retrospective catalogue,AlviaWardlaw describes how the railroad, the
turtle and the shotgun houses are all important symbols that Biggers used to show the continued
importance of spiritualism and traditional black culture in African-American communities.Wardlaw
