EDWARD M. BANNISTER (1828 - 1901)
Untitled (Rhode Island Landscape).
Oil on canvas, 1893. 406x610 mm; 16x24 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower right.
Provenance: private collection.
This fine example of Bannister’s late painting in the 1890s shows his transition away from the Barbizon
style of pastoral landscape. Influenced by Impressionism, he became more interested in portraying the
atmospheric beauty of the New England landscape with a freer, more painterly approach.
