ALVIN CARL HOLLINGSWORTH (1928 - 2000)
Voodoo.
Acrylic and mixed media collage (including keys, playing cards and sand) on slate, mounted to
plywood, 1977. 914x914 mm; 36x36 inches. Signed in acrylic, lower left recto. Signed in oil across
the verso. From the
Space,Time, Infinity
series.
Provenance: private collection.
Alvin Hollingsworth planned to show these multimedia works in a 1977 Allan Stone Gallery
exhibition. Although he had a solo show of multimedia work with collage in 1965 at Terry
Dintenfass Gallery, this was his first abstract series. He incorporated old keys he had purchased at a
flea market in Paris with many different materials that reflect the elements and the passage of time.
This is the first work from this experimental series to come to auction. Hewitt pp. 5 and 8.
